FAQ's1. What league does VHYF play in? A. VHYF is a member of the Jefferson-Shelby Youth Football League. The league is competitive in nature. The league is NOT a recreational league. Game participation is based on each player's skill level as demonstrated in practice. The league offers a playoff and championship format at the end of the season to determine the champion of each weight classification/division. 2. Who do we compete against? A. The Jefferson-Shelby Youth Football League is currently comprised of Cahaba Valley (Briarwood), Chelsea, Helena, Homewood, Hoover, Oak Mountain, Pelham, Thompson, and Vestavia Hills. As such, all games will be played against teams from each of these respective parks. 3. What are the age and weight restrictions for each classification? A. The various weight classes are as follows: Jr. 1 - (70# Division) Teams for players who are 5 and 6 years old. Players cannot be 7 years old before May 1 of the current year. A player must play at whatever age he/she is on April 30 of the current year. Players who turn 7 betweeen May 1 and August 31 must be in First Grade. Players must weigh in at 70.9 lbs or less to be considered an "Unrestricted Player". All payers weighing between 71 and 80.9 will be considered a "Restricted Player" and must play on the line. Jr.2 – (80# Division). Teams for Players 6 and 7 years old. Players cannot be 8 years old before May 1 of the current year. Player must play at whatever age he/she is on April 30 of the current year. Players who turn 8 between May 1 and August 31 must be in the 2nd grade. Players must weigh in at 80.9 lbs or less to be considered un "Unrestricted Player." All players weighing between 81 and 90.9 lbs. will be considered a "Restricted Player" and must play on the line. Jr.3 – (90# Division). Teams for players 7 and 8 years old, cannot be 9 years old before May 1 of the current year. Player must play at whatever age he/she is on April 30 of the current year. Players who turn 9 between May 1 and August 31 must be in the 3rd grade. Players must weight in at 90.9 lbs or less to be considered an "Unrestricted Player." All players weighing between 91 and 100.9 lbs. will be considered a "Restricted Player" and must play on the line. Jr.4 – (105# Division). Teams for Players 8 and 9 years old, cannot be 10 years old before May 1 of the current year. Player must play at whatever age he/she is on April 30 of the current year. Players who turn 10 between May 1 and August 31 must be in the 4rth grade. Players must weigh in at 105.9 lbs or less to be considered and "Unrestricted Player." All players weighing between 106 and and 115.9 lbs will be considered a "Restriced Player" and must play on the line. Sr.1 – (120# Division). Teams for Players 9 and 10 years old, cannot be 11 years old before May 1 of the current year. Players must play at whatever age he/she is on April 30 of the current year. Players who turn 11 between May 1 and August 31 must be in the 5th grade. Players must weigh in at 120.9 lbs or less to be considered a "Restricted Player." How often will we play and practice? A. All games will be played during the week, Monday through Thursday. There will be no weekend games until the championship game. The practice days are normally three days a week in the pre-season and twice during the regular season. The head coach will determine practice schedules. 5. What if a player signs up and later chooses not to play? A. VHYF will issue a full refund if requested by July 1. Partial refunds will be issued if requested by August 15th. This will give each player approximately two or three weeks of practice time to see if this is for you. 6. When do we weigh-in to determine weight requirements and how often must we weigh-in? A. Each player is only required to weigh-in on one (1) occasion prior to the commencement of each regular season. Official weigh-in will take place on the third (3rd) Saturday in August prior to the start of the current season at a time and location established by the JSYF Board. Each player will be allowed to weigh-in one (1) time without exception. A player whose weight exceeds the maximum weight limit for their age appropriate division will be allowed the opportunity to make weight a second time for their age appropriate division at a time and place specified by the JSYF Board. If the player's weight still exceeds the maximum weight limit set for their age appropriate division, the player will be allowed the opportunity to move up to a higher maximum weight division with parents consent, and the consent of the JSYFL, if correct weight falls with the higher classification. Please note there are also "Restricted Player Rules" and weight classifications. If a player falls within a certain weight range, the player must play in a down position on the line of scrimmage. Please see complete "Restricted Player Rules" on the VHYF.com home page. 7. How much is the VHYF registration fee and what does that fee cover? A. The 2011 registration fee is $175.00 per player. That fee covers the Vestavia Hills Park and Recreation fee that you normally pay separate from your football fee. It also covers equipment, game and practice uniforms, team photo and the general cost associated with running the football program. This would include field maintenance, officials and general upkeep. 8. What “equipment” is furnished by VHYF? A. VHYF will furnish each player with a helmet, chinstrap, shoulder pads, practice pants and pads, practice jersey, game jersey and game pants and pads. Each player is required to pay an additional equipment deposit of $200 which is fully refundable upon the return of all equipment at the end of the season. 9. What time will the games be played and where? A. All home games will be played at the new Vestavia fields located on Sicard Hollow Rd. near Liberty Park. Away games will be played at the opponent’s home field. For the lower weight classes (80lbs, 90lbs and 105lbs) games will generally be played at 6:00. The 120lbs and 130lbs teams will generally play at 7:30. 10. What are the dimensions of the playing field? A. All teams will play on a 80 yard by 40-yard field minimum; 80 yard by 160-foot regulation field is acceptable. 11. How long are the games? A. All Sr. games will consist of four 10-minute quarters by the clock (stop clock). All Jr. games will consist of four 8-minute quarters, stop clock. 12. How is the end-of-the-season champion determined? A. A JSYF Championship will be awarded for each weight division at the end of each season’s play. The top two teams will compete in this event. JSYF will have playoffs to determine two teams to participate in championship games for each weight division. The playoff format is as follows: b. Second place team in each weight class plays third place team. 13. Are there any mandatory fund- raisers that will require us to pay additional money similar to the program in baseball? A. No, we will offer a spirit pack that each player can purchase. This will include football shorts, t-shirt. There are no mandatory costs that you will be required to pay for! However we do ask that each team have sponsors to help offset team expenses during the season. 14. Are there any alternative youth football leagues which may be less competitive in nature? A. Yes.
